Haukeland University Hospital

Haukeland University Hospital is one of the largest hospitals in Norway. The hospital offers almost every form of medical diagnosis and treatment, with the exception of organ transplantation, which is only done at Rikshospitalet in Oslo.

Haukeland University Hospital is the regional hospital for western Norway. The hospital offers both somatic and psychiatric health-care services to the region's 900.000 inhabitants.

With 200 admissions and 1,000 out-patients a day, it is one of the busiest hospitals in Scandinavia.

With its total of 8.500 employees, the hospital is also the largest employer in  Western Norway:

More than 700 physicians and 2.700 nurses provide round-the-clock health services to more than 67,000 inpatients and 314,000 outpatients a year. The hospital has 1,100 beds.

Haukeland University Hospital is a teaching hospital with close links to the University of Bergen. Every year, 180 medical students receive their clinical training at the hospital, which is also an important teaching and training centre for other groups of health-care and other students.

At the hospital's own training centre, more than 100 nurses a year specialise in intensive care, anaesthesia, paediatrics, and theatre nursing. The hospital also offers 100 nursing specialists additional education every year.

With 400,000 m2 of modern or modernised  buildings and a wide range of medical equipment, Haukeland University Hospital has for long been the most cost-effective hospital in Norway. The fact that it can offer a complete service in virtually every field of medicine is thanks to its well-qualified, highly motivated and stable staff.

In  the past few years, the hospital has increased its emphasis on quality improvement in order to ensure that  patients receive the highest standards of treatment and a continuously improving service.

The national health authorities have declared quality improvement a priority area, and patients, health-care workers, politicians, and the media are continuously focusing on quality in the broadest sense of the term.

Haukeland University Hospital and the other regional hospitals have therefore been given the task of establishing national quality assurance systems and implementing these in their own health regions.

Haukeland University Hospital is combining quality improvement with an extensive management development programme, with the aim of creating a strong, unified corporate culture as a platform for delegation of authority and responsibility.

One important aspect of this process is comprehensive staff training  at all levels, with special focus on managerial functions. The ideological basis for the development process is the "total quality management" adapted to match the local culture of the hospital.

As an important employer and medical institution, Haukeland university hospital is always in the focus by national and local press, radio and television. The hospital therefore regards the media, the authorities and our health-care partners as important "customers" in addition to patients, their families and students.
