Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) and Bwaila Hospital, Lilongwe, is a central hospital owned by the Ministry of Health.
With its 750 beds it is the second largest hospital in Malawi. The hospital is a referral hospital for Malawi’s central region and provides services for a population of about five millions. Up to 2009 Bwaila Hospital functioned as KCH’s maternity clinic. It was split from KCH and it is now a hospital under the Lilongwe local authority.
The two hospitals have since 2007 implemented a surgical/orthopaedic service project (KCH) and maternal health project. The projects have been organised as a collaborative effort that besides KCH and Bwaila Hospital, involves three Norwegian university hospitals, namely Ullevål University Hospital (UHH), University Hospital of Northern Norway and Haukeland University Hospital (HUH).
