Black Lion Hospital
Ethiopia
Haukeland University Hospital (HUH) is collaborating with Black Lion Hospital/Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital (BLH) in Ethiopia. This is a referral hospital with 700 beds, and is located in Addis Ababa.
BLH is affiliated with the Addis Ababa University’s School of Medicine, and is the training center for undergraduate and postgraduate medical students, dentists, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory technicians etc.
Our projects in Ethiopia started in 2001 with a project in the field of plastic surgery and burn care. The Burn Unit at Yekati 12 Hospital in Addis Ababa was the first of its kind in Ethiopia, and was followed by the establishment of a Department for Plastic Surgery. Ethiopian surgeons got their clinical specialization in plastic surgery (burns, CLP and ENT), and nurses, physiotherapists, technicians etc. were exchanged between HUH and Yekatit 12 as a part of these programs.
Today, these successful programs are continued by the Ethiopians themselves.
In the wake of the plastic surgery program, other departments at HUH are now engaged in projects with BLH; Neurosurgery, Anesthesia, Gastroenterology, Neurology, Cardiology and Medical Ethics.
