Anaestesiology

The Department of Anesthesiology at Haukeland University Hospital (HUH) has been collaborating with Black Lion Hospital (BLH) in the field of Anesthesiology since 2011 when a specialist training program was established.

The first five candidates were admitted to a three year training program at BLH/The University of Addis Ababa (AAU). Specialists from HUH serve as mentors and teachers on the program at BLH. The need for specialists in Anesthesia in Ethiopia is increasing due to the development of new surgical specialties and more advanced surgery. In October 2014, the first five specialists who started in autumn 2011 graduated, and passed their final exam.

When the program started in 2011, the intensive care unit (ICU) was in a very bad condition and lacked the minimum of equipment needed for training of specialists. A private donor, from Bergen sponsored the project with NOK 2 million for renovation and purchase of equipment, and the ICU is now renovated and operational.
