Gastroenterology
The collaboration between the Gastroenterological Section at Haukeland University Hospital (HUH) and Black Lion University Hospital (BLH) started in 2010 and has two main focuses;
- To improve diagnosis and therapy in the gastroenterology section at BLH and thus strengthen the hospital's position as a leading educational institution in Ethiopia.
- HUH-employees are given the opportunity to work at BLH and gain useful knowledge about medical problems rarely seen in Norway.
Doctors and nurses from HUH give lectures and arrange practical training in endoscopy and ultrasound at BLH twice a year. Employees from HUH have participated in the shaping of the formal requirements for specialist education in gastroenterology in Ethiopia.
The candidates who have completed their specialist training in Gastroenterology at BLH are the first gastroenterologists trained in Ethiopia, for the last 30 years.
The Gastroenterological section at HUH has, in collaboration with the World Federation of Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (WFUMB), supported the establishment of a national ultrasound Association in Ethiopia. The plan is to establish a "Center of Excellence" in Ultrasound, in Addis Ababa. This center will serve as a training center in ultrasound in Ethiopia and East Africa.
A new research project in the field of improving the diagnosis and treatment of liver cancer, which has a high prevalence in Ethiopia, started up in 2014.
