IPSNOR - Individual placement and support, implementation and effect evaluation

Individual Placement and Support (IPS) is a method used around the world to help people with mental health challenges get into work. The IPSNOR project looks at how well this approach works when introduced in Northern Norway—and in the country as a whole.

IPSNOR is a collection of research projects led by Nordlandssykehuset HF and funded by the Research Council. The goal is to promote the use of Individual Placement and Support (IPS) in Norway’s specialist health services, in collaboration with the Centre for Population Health.

Mental illness is now the most common diagnosis for disability in most Western countries, and its prevalence has increased over the past few decades. Fewer than 10% of people with schizophrenia in Norway are active in the workforce. Work not only improves personal quality of life but also eases economic pressures on society.

IPS is specially designed for people with severe mental health challenges. Approximately 30 randomised studies from around the world have shown that IPS increases workforce participation compared to traditional vocational rehabilitation methods. Despite this strong evidence, IPS is not yet standard practice anywhere in the world.

The project primarily addresses the challenges of implementing IPS and evaluating its impact at the societal level.

The project is funded by the Research Council – HELSEVEL – Gode og effektive helse-, omsorgs- og velferdstenester (Project #273665 and #280589)

Ethics approval: REK Nord #75961
