Our Central Research Projects
ATLAS4Dependence
ATLAS4Dependence is a national study taking place at several hospitals in Norway. The study investigates whether dexamphetamine is a safe and effective treatment for adults who are dependent on amphetamines or methamphetamines.
This patient group often faces significant health problems and social challenges. Currently, there are few documented treatments with medication. The study aims to provide new knowledge that can contribute to better treatment. Helse Bergen coordinates the study.

BMX-BAR
BMX-BAR is a national study taking place at several hospitals. The study includes patients receiving medication-assisted rehabilitation (LAR) who are also dependent on benzodiazepines.
The study compares two treatment methods:
stable treatment with prescribed benzodiazepines
gradual tapering of benzodiazepines
The researchers investigate, among other things, whether the treatment reduces the use of benzodiazepines that are not prescribed by a doctor, and whether the treatment is safe.
The goal is to gain more knowledge about the treatment of individuals who are dependent on both opioids and benzodiazepines.
Sub-studies and Research Training
The main projects include several doctoral projects and other sub-studies. These investigate, among other things:
- quality of life
- patients' experiences
- use of health services
- costs and other socio-economic factors
Collaboration and User Involvement
Good research is developed together with those it concerns. Patients and user representatives are therefore involved in:
- designing the projects
- conducting the research
- communicating the results
We also collaborate with professional environments and research institutions in Norway and other countries.
The research section welcomes contact with patients, professionals, researchers, and other partners who wish to contribute to better treatment of substance dependence.
