UiB Students Impressed with Lightning Research Presentations

At the 3rd International Meeting on Regenerative Medicine, seven young researchers had the opportunity to present their work. The students were challenged to communicate their research clearly and engagingly — in just five minutes and five slides.

The presentation topics ranged from immune regulation and stem cell-based therapies to advanced biomaterials and innovative approaches for regenerating severe burn injuries as well as bone and dental tissue. The young researchers included two medical research track students, one dental student, and four PhD candidates.

A professional jury consisting of two internationally recognized researchers — Professor Susanna Miettinen (University of Tampere, Finland) and Professor Adrian Harwood (Cardiff University, UK) — evaluated the presentations. They emphasized clear objectives, slide quality, oral delivery, time management, and the ability to communicate research effectively.

After careful consideration, the jury selected two winners, who were honored with awards during the conference dinner:

Eylem Baysal researches how extracellular vesicles from regulatory T cells influence the body’s ability to form new bone tissue.

Title: "Elucidating mechanism behind the impact of regulatory T cell-derived extracellular vesicles on osteogenesis"

Dewaki Chhetri compares three different causes of limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD) — a painful eye disease that can lead to vision loss — to better understand disease development and contribute to new treatment strategies.

Title"Rethinking limbal stem cell deficiency"

The Lightning Talks provide a valuable platform for young researchers to practice scientific communication while showcasing the strong and diverse research environment in regenerative medicine at UiB and Haukeland University Hospital to an international audience.

About the conference

The 3rd International Meeting, organized by the Mohn Research Centre for Regenerative Medicine, is an annual event that brings together around 80 participants from hospitals, academia, and industry. The meeting serves as an important forum for everyone involved in the development of cell-based medical products and advanced therapies (ATMPs).

This year, twelve invited speakers—both national and international experts—presented groundbreaking research and clinical advancements in ATMP treatments for lupus, diabetes, leukemia, multiple sclerosis, eye diseases, schizophrenia, dental health, and burn injuries. The innovative therapies showcased included the use of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), CAR-T cells, induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs), 3D bioprinting, and extracellular vesicles.
