Welcome to the Norwegian Course for Seafarer's Doctors!

In this course you will learn how to assess health-related safety risks associated with work on Norwegian ships and mobile offshore units and to conduct health examinations of seafarers according to the Norwegian regulations.

The course covers mandatory competency requirements according to the Regulations of 5 June 2014 No. 805 on medical examination of employees on Norwegian ships and mobile offshore units and qualifies you to apply to the Norwegian Maritime Authority for approval as a seafarer's doctor in Norway.

We look forward to welcoming you to our course!

Course structure

The course consists of three parts:

  • Part 1 pre-course learning material - individual homework to be completed prior to the course session (approx. 7.5 hours).
  • Part 2 physical course session - physical teaching over three days with mandatory participation, see tentative timetable (22 hours).
  • Part 3 course test - digital multiple-choice exam.

Please note that the course is largely based on discussions and sharing of experiences between course participants. Thus, the course will require active participation from all participants, throughout the physical course session.

The course is taught in English. Adequate proficiency in medical English is required for completion of the course.

Approval

The course has been prepared in accordance with the national curriculum for seafarer's doctor’s courses in Norway and covers relevant competence requirements for seafarer's doctors according to the Norwegian regulations.

The course has been approved by the Norwegian Maritime Authority (NMA).

Nonetheless, please note that participation in the course does not guarantee approval as a Seafarer's Doctor by the Norwegian authority. This is decided by the Norwegian Embassy in your area. The Embassy will make a decision based on the credentials of the doctor, as well as the need for additional seafarers’ doctors in the area.

We strongly advise all prospective participants to make contact with the Norwegian Embassy in their area before signing up for the course.

The Norwegian Centre for Maritime and Diving Medicine, as course provider, has no role in the approval process.

Detailed application procedures can be found on the website of the Norwegian Maritime Authority.

Pre-course test

As part of the pre-course learning, all participants must submit a pre-course test. You will find a link to the pre-course test in the confirmation email sent to you after you have registered for the course. The pre-course test must be successfully completed by 1.11.26.

Course test

The course test will be held on the last day of the course. The course test consists of 20 multiple-choice questions that must be solved within 60 minutes. 80% correct answers are required to pass. All aids are allowed, with the exception of the use of artificial intelligence and collaboration with others.

Both the pre-course test and the course test will be conducted on a digital platform called Flexiquiz. The link to the pre-course test and the course test will be sent to the e-mail adress that were used to sign up for the course. All participants must bring their own laptop/PC or tablet/iPad to the course to complete the course test.

Compendium and timetable

You will find a compendium with mandatory preparation material and a draft timetable under practical information on the registration page.

Administrative information

Registration is done through the course website at LetsReg (see link to registraton on the top of this page). The course fee is paid by credit card and is charged in full at the time of registration.

There is a limited number of places on each course. If the course is fully subscribed, it will no longer be possible to register. If you wish to be on the waiting list, you can send an email to the course coordinator.

If you withdraw from the course more than 30 days before the course is scheduled, the full course fee will be refunded. If you cancel after this, 50% of the course fee will be refunded. Illness does not entitle you to a refund, beyond the terms above. Notice of withdrawal should be sent by email to maritimekurs@helse-bergen.no.

A paid place can be transferred and used by others from the same company/organization, if this is clarified with us no later than one week before the start of the course. A prerequisite for such changes is that the new course participant has the opportunity to complete pre-course learning and passes the pre-course test before the start of the course. We ask that all changes related to participation be reported to us as early as possible.

We reserve the right in exceptional cases with insufficient number of registered participants to cancel a scheduled course.

A decision on cancellation will be made as soon as possible after the registration deadline has expired. Registered participants will be offered the option of being transferred to the next available course or alternatively a full refund of the course fee.
