A digital tool for cancer prevention is now available in Europe

PCP-IT is a tool that supports the implementation of cancer prevention programs. PCP-IT has been developed through the EU-funded project PIECES, which aims to increase implementation success for cancer prevention across Europe.

The PIECES project is now halfway through and has received good feedback on the mid-term evaluation. Several working groups in Spain, the Netherlands, UK, Italy, Ukraine, Germany, Ireland and Albania have now adopted PCP IT.

PCP-IT supports users in planning and implementing preventive measures by

  • define target groups,
  • identify goals and barriers,
  • develop strategies to overcome barriers,
  • and evaluate results.

The main objective of the PIECES study is to support and learn from the process of selecting, adapting and implementing existing evidence-based programs to increase the reach and effectiveness of primary cancer prevention programs in real-world settings.

The PCT-IT study now uses a multi-site case comparison design, exploring the impact of PCP-IT and its mechanisms of action in different contexts. The geographic diversity and variation of socio-cultural realities at the sites, as well as the heterogeneity of the PCP programs, provide a natural environment to gain an understanding of the improvement and possible scale-up of PCP-IT.

The tool can improve the patients health and quality of life.

PIECES has recently completed a mid-term evaluation with good results. The first “Project Review Report” has been delivered – a report with a thorough assessment of the project’s progress and possible areas for improvement. The report was submitted to the European Commission and confirmed that the project is well on its way to achieving its objectives. The results of this study have the potential to improve cancer screening, as well as to improve the patients health and quality of life.

PCP-IT is assessed on:

-Whether PCP-IT is usable and whether implementation teams are satisfied with the tool.
-What works for whom when using PCP-IT to select, customize and implement PCP programs.
-Whether PCP-IT is feasible and effective in improving the use, delivery, fidelity and sustainability of PCP programs.
