Transgenerational and intergenerational epigenetic inheritance in allergic diseases.
This review aims to summarize the evidence for transgenerational and intergenerational inheritance of allergic disease and the role of epimutations and epigenetic inheritance in patients with allergic diseases.
The role of epigenetic regulation in the etiology of asthma and allergy is becoming increasingly evident. More knowledge about the epigenetic mechanisms involved in inflammation and the immune response to allergens will provide better understanding of the pathophysiology of allergic diseases and a mechanistic understanding of how genes and the environment interact to determine disease susceptibility. This review aims to summarize the evidence for transgenerational and intergenerational inheritance of allergic disease and the role of epimutations and epigenetic inheritance in patients with allergic diseases.
