Our Second Computer Engineer Joins the Team: Meet Mari
One is good, but two is even better! We're happy to welcome Mari as our second computer engineer. With her on board, the team is stronger and ready to tackle exciting projects and new tasks. Say hello to Mari!
My name is Mari Maaløy Alsaker and I am 26 years old. In June 2024 I graduated from the University of Bergen (UiB) with a master’s degree in biomedical engineering (MEDTEK) from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.
After a much-needed holiday, I started working as a computer engineer at the Department of Pathology at Haukeland University Hospital as a part of the “PiV”-project (Pathology services in the Western Norway Health Region – a centre for applied digitization). Right now, I focus on organizing and preparing data for training, validation and testing of AI-algorithms for segmentation- and classification tasks in non-neoplastic kidney diseases. With a database of WSIs (Whole Slide Images) from our region, it will be possible to train, validate and test AI tools specifically intended for our patient group.
The digitization of pathology has been employed in today’s clinical workflow which makes it possible to benefit from AI. These tools can aid pathologists in evaluating biopsies for diagnostic and prognostic information. I will also be a part of finding a way of employing our tools in the clinical workflow in a responsible manner following the requirements of the European Union.
There are two locations for the researchers in the PiV-project and I will participate in both Bergen and in Stavanger. Establishment and maintenance of databases and implementation of AI tools into clinical workflow meet different challenges for the different areas of pathology and will require customization.
During my studies I have longed for the practical examples of how the topics of study are implemented in the hospitals. Now I am a part of it, and I am looking forward to seeing what we can achieve together!
